Fit and Fab: Bring it on, BBG!

Junior college was probably the time of my life, when weight-related issues became real. I wasn’t as involved in sports due to heavy council duties and commitments. Food in my school was too delicious and had generous portion – especially the chicken cutlet from the Western stall. And so I began to put on weight, like how you would expect with greater input and less output. I tried to lose weight after the ‘A’ levels. I even persuaded my Mum to purchase a weight loss package for me before, but saw limited results. After that failed try at the weight loss centre, I decided to run 45mins every day but had to stop due to the stress to my knees from the daily runs. Slowly, I switched to daily swims which were less taxing on the joints. But swims are less effective in weight-loss so I didn’t achieve much breakthrough in the years after. I looked back at my university/dating photos (courtesy of Facebook memories) and realised, hey my face was so round!

So my turning point came in August 2014 when we decided that our wedding would be in December 2014. And that was a good 5 months away. I signed up for a gym membership not for the reason of losing weight, but more for toning myself so I would look good in the wedding gown. I went for Pilates classes diligently and ran on the treadmill for 30mins either before or after the class. I continued my swimming routines and amazingly I managed to achieve visible results and earned much compliments from my friends and relatives. While weight loss on the weighing scale was minimal, my body saw great changes. My lower body was slimmer and my arms became more toned. I credited the results to Pilates classes and the challenging workouts. I really enjoyed Pilates and I have never looked back since.

Pilates, swims, occasional runs currently form the core of my weekly exercise regime. My body has been very comfortable with these exercises for a good 1.5 years. And I was looking for something to give my body a new challenge. I stumbled across ‘Bikini Body Guide’ by Kayla Itsines while on Instagram and saw the transformation photos of followers worldwide. I recalled that a good friend of mine have embarked on this BBG journey and asked for her feedback. After reading online reviews as well, I decided to give the BBG workout a try. At this point of writing, it is Week 1 Day 2 for me and my thighs are aching badly. It is a good ache because it means my body has been pushed and challenged. I am not certain if I have that discipline to complete the 12-week programme but I am going to try for as long as I can. I am not sure whether I can handle waking up at 6am for 3 days of the week, but having a gym 5mins from my current workplace is a big plus point for a satisfying lunchtime workout.

I am not following the diet plan as well, so I am not sure what results would I be seeing. But generally, I am trying my best to eat more healthily. So bring it on, BBG and all the best to me!

Wedding Bells: Part 7 – Our wedding day {A recollection of memories}

So our wedding day has come and gone! Despite the long hours (I woke up at 230am!), it was very much a memorable day for us both. 3 weeks on, I am still overwhelmed by emotions, both joy and gratitude, that in spite of certain hiccups here and there, the day proceeded smoothly and happily!

We have not collected our actual day wedding photos from our bridal studio, so i could only remember bits and pieces of the day based on my memories. Yet, all I have are definitely sweet memories of that day!

Gatecrashing

That’s definitely the first highlight of the day. 1 groom and his bridegrooms trying to outwit the bridemaids. I was spying on them all the while via the videocam from my handphone all the while. And I am very surprised that Mister managed to spot my lipstick mark on his first guess! Well done Mister and your 兄弟s!

Oh there was hiccup #1: the lace trimmings on my wedding gown partially fell off just before the arrival of the groom.

Tea ceremony

All I remembered was that I became 舅妈 and 婶婶 overnight >.<

Solemnisation

Oh yes, my most-anticipated segment of the day! But hiccup #2: we left the wedding gown at home. My godfather had to speed down to Sentosa to deliver my gown in the end.

Walking down the aisle was touching, with my favourite song “From this moment” by Shania Twain playing in the background, with Daddy by my side, with Mister waiting for me right in front <3 Thankfully, no tripping over of the gown.

丢花球

What can I say, the one whom we wanted to catch the bouquet caught the bouquet in the end. Haha with my excellent throwing skills and accomodating bridesmaids lols!

Lunch reception

Buffet at Shutters gathered much positive feedback from our guests. The staff was really attentive too! They made sure I was served food regularly, but there were too many things to take note of and too little time to eat. There was the wedding cake from Pine Garden (I insisted on having a 100% real wedding cake). Alas, I didn’t get to try it on the actual day. And champagne popping with 3 rounds of yum seng too!

Drinks party

Hiccup #3: It started pouring in the late afternoon. Nonetheless, it’s a blessing in disguise, as we changed our venue of our night event to Shutters restaurant again. Hosting the drinks indoor was a good idea in fact. Our guests had comfortable seats to sit and there was aircon too! The ambience of the restaurant was also in line with the gold theme of the night. What’s there not to love about our party!

Mister and I are really pleased that our wedding turned out just the way we wanted it to be! Not quite the conventional wedding typical of Singaporeans, but we did achieve our main objective of celebrating this special day of ours with our family and friends in our own ways. Thankful to everyone who have been exceptionally supportive of us in this wedding preparation journey!

As for our honeymoon to Paris, it definitely deserves a separate post on its own! ^_^

#Throwback: Spencer turns 10!

Oops so this is another #throwback post! But it’s unforgivable to give this blog entry a miss.

Well, many things happened during the month of December 2014. I was on leave, I took an exam, I celebrated my birthday, I got married (as seen from my ‘Wedding Bells’ series of posts), but there was this special one thing which made me extremely proud and that is, my favourite furry boy turned 10 in December 2014 too!

Turning 10 was a huge milestone for him. For a boy with one remaining kidney, this is an amazing feat indeed. It was a huge celebration of joy for my family and we decided to throw his first ever birthday party, with 2 other dogs and many humans over that evening 🙂 From his priceless megawatt smile, I know he had nothing but fun that evening, which made everything worthwhile!

Wedding Bells: Part 5 – 过大礼

Because we are Chinese.

Key takeaway: Every single item symbolises 好兆头.

After-thoughts: Just glad it’s over! This was a huge stress factor for everyone, including the folks.

Wedding Bells: Part 4 – Our photoshoot, of elements that matter

I like to think that I’m more blessed than other brides-to-be, with 2 pre-wedding shoots under my belt. And for the 2nd shoot, we got to feature some new items like our wedding bands and our DIY wedding dolls. It’s kind of a blessing in disguise too.

The brainstorming process wasn’t easy. Before shoot #1, I had lengthy discussions with Mister and Rachel about the locations, the elements to be featured, the costumes, the props, the logistics and so on. There were so many things to be considered as well as the unpredictability of Spencer and the weather too. Thankfully for both shoots, Spencer and the weather treated us well.

Thinking back, we had so much fun on both occasions and the best thing was, all the elements that matter to us was featured in the shoot one way or the other, be it Spencer, the dolls, the frogs, sunset, lalang field, NTU, cheongsam etc. A lot of thoughts and time (2.5 hours) went into the album layout too, to perfect it the way we wished for it to be.

Thank you Mister, for consoling me after shoot #1 that everything was alright, for assuring me that shoot #2 would be just as wonderful if not more, for making me happy and bringing out my best smiles for the shoot!

Thank you, Mister!

Thank you, Mister!

Wedding Bells: Part 3 – Our DIY wedding dolls

You know you are in love with your dolls, when at random moments of the day, you will steal some glimpses of the dolls in your phone and start smiling uncontrollably to yourself. That’s who I am, a proud creator of my dolls!

20141111-DSC_2420

From balls of yarn to these 3D dolls, the process was challenging for me, considering that I picked up crochet only in February this year. Before I started on these dolls, I was worried that they wouldn’t look like dolls at the end of the day, simply because I can’t gauge proportion very well. If you have seen my Wasabi and Ketchup plushies in person, you may be surprised at their humongous eyes compared to their tiny bodies. Mister can vouch for my horrible sense of proportion, because I never fail to get him wrong-sized tee shirts whenever he isn’t around for fitting. But I decided to take the leap of faith anyway.

I wasn’t confident that I had the skill level to pull off these dolls. For sure, I can understand what’s a single crochet, what’s a double crochet, what’s a magic loop and all. But creating a doll is just so different… Nonetheless, I took up this challenge because I really wanted to have a set of wedding dolls handmade by myself. If all goes well, I know it will be the best wedding present to ourselves. And there won’t be any regrets when I look back on our wedding many years later. Instead, it will be with pride when I show off these dolls and exclaim “I made these dolls!”

20141111-DSC_2438

Time wasn’t on my side either. I wasn’t sure that I could get these dolls out in time for wedding shoot #2 (the reason for the shoot #2 is long…), but I just crochet as and when I could, such as during my morning bus rides, during pockets of waiting time and before bedtime. For weeks, my life revolves around work, gym, swimming and crochet. My trusty white nike jaw-string bag has been my best companion for this period, never leaving my side. The Saturday before the shoot, I felt like I needed 48 hours in a day.

Thankfully, it all paid off! ^_^

The dolls were completed just in time, the night before the shoot. So there they are, the dolls standing proud and tall and me feeling pleased with myself!

#Throwback: Bali and selfies

I’m always caught in the #throwback situation.. And I only have myself to blame for not being a timely blogger.

Never mind that this post is 2 months overdue, Bali was still nothing short of amazing! It was a perfect combination of sightseeing, adventure, good food and just lazing our lives away on the beach. That’s why going for a beach holiday is on my to-do list every year 🙂 We found another enjoyable activity during this trip, which was taking a selfie shot with the selfie stick that Mister invested in before the trip. We loved taking those selfie shots so much until my food shots were largely compromised during this trip. My whole mind was preoccupied with taking that selfie stick and going “10..9..8..7..6..5..4..3..2..SMILE!”

Mister and the selfie stick!

Mister and the selfie stick

As always, we didn’t plan any itinerary for Bali because that is our travelling style – arrive at the destination, pick up some brochures at the airport and decide our to-do for the next few days just there and then. It worked well for our previous trips to Penang, Phuket and Taipei. And no surprise that it worked great for Bali too!

Villa

What’s Bali without staying in a villa and a private pool?

The pool that I always jump in no matter how cold it was

We chose Daluman Villa after peering through many tripadvisor reviews in January (yes, we booked our holiday a good 7 months in advance, but I have learnt my lesson not to be so gancheong anymore in case the airline cease operations again!)

The view that greeted us every morning during our breakfast

Daluman Villa did not disappoint! The breakfast was surprisingly good, with some daily changes made to the menu. The staff was nice and friendly too! We wanted to go to the streets to get a taxi to the airport on the day of our departure and they actually stopped us and grabbed a taxi for us instead.

Sightseeing

One of those days, we booked this day trip from the tour desk of our villa to venture out to Ubud, Monkey Forest, padi rice field, Mount Kintamani and the traditional kecak dance! Very exciting day, despite the traffic jam along the way and the too-active monkeys which scared the hell out of me! My freaked out expressions are too classic to be shown publicly lols. I find the traditional kecak dance very interesting in fact. An ensemble of half-naked men responsible for the sound effects and some lead actors who speak no words and merely do actions. We spent a good half of the time figuring out which scene were we at, and then getting very pleased with ourselves whenever we see a familiar character that we recognise from the plot synopsis handout.

Adventure

The only adventure we did was white water rafting at Telaga Waja River, which was my maiden experience at water rafting. Apart from some rashes due to the lifejacket, it was pretty enjoyable and less tiring than expected! We made friends with 2 German ladies who travelled halfway across the globe to be in Bali, and we actually bumped into them again in Kuta one of the nights. Well, this is fate! In short, water rafting is about getting stuck atop some rocks and then having everyone rocking vigorously to get ourselves back in the water – some good teamwork there.

The activity itself was fun, but my after-thoughts during lunch was slightly gloomy. Afterthoughts about the disparity between developed and developing countries in particular. Seeing the locals carry the deflated floats on top of their heads and climbing up the steep flight of stairs to get the floats to the starting point of the course. It is tough work (my legs turned jelly just climbing the stairs without carrying anything), it is dangerous (the steps are steep, narrow and wet) and all they have is a bare stick to support themselves in their ascent. I wonder how much they get paid per trip or per day, but shouldn’t there be a more efficient and safer way to transport the floats? Hmmmmm…

Food

Right now, all I remembered of Bali’s food was Naughty Nuri and its pork ribs. That was our first meal in Bali, and it set the tone just right for a week of pigging out.

Pork ribs at Naughty Nuri's!

Pork ribs at Naughty Nuri!

We ate other local delights along the way, like Pak Malen’s Babi Guling, barbequed seafood, but I think Naughty Nuri was the most memorable cause we ate 2 pork ribs that meal! Oh and that rotating pig on display in Kuta! And A&W in Kuta Discovery Mall too, where our childhood memories just came flooding back. As Singaporeans who grew up in the 90s, A&W meant so much to us! The last time we ate A&W together was in Bangkok in 2010. Oh mans, time flies indeed haha!

Beach

We were mainly at Seminyak Beach and also Kuta Beach briefly for our seafood dinner by the sea. If I am ever going back to Seminyak Beach again, I am just going to laze around at Amazing Bali Cafe, read my book, order glasses after glasses of watermelon juice for myself and beer for Mister, and eat some fries and finger food to keep our mouths occupied. I think it’s actually much more worth it than renting a sunbed on the beach. Another lesson learnt. I get beachfront views, I get food, and I get access to toilets too! It’s like the best of everything!

On that side of the island where Seminyak and Kuta lies, you can absolutely catch breathtaking sunset! I have this habit of chasing the sun everywhere I go. I caught the sunrise from my rooftop in Singapore. I chased the sun along PIE one random Sunday too. I camped for our first sunset together with Mister in Taipei and there I was, doing it all over again in Bali. The sun and its orange rays are just so magnificent, just so captivating!

Bali 2014 – forever etched in our memories!

Bali was just so much fun for the two of us! And Wasabi and Ketchup too whom we brought along with us! Till the next time I step foot to Bali again, I’m counting my blessings that we have Paris upcoming next. And it’s 10 days now instead of the planned 7 days. Very much looking forward to our next trip! 🙂

#Throwback: Our summer days in Korea {Seoul & Jeju}

Well, it’s almost a month since we returned from Korea. Regrettably, a lot of details that happened during our trip have become increasingly blurred with the lapse of time, like the names of the places that we had been to. But as I briefly glanced through the 1000+ photos (from my camera and my sister’s camera) that we took during the trip, I know certain memories won’t be lost, like how Korea was our first ever overseas trip together. Just the 3 of us spending time together, sharing an abalone feast, gasping at the wonders of nature in Jeju, doing funny poses in the trick art museum and our crazy shopping in Myeongdong.

If I have to choose a word to describe this trip, the most appropriate word would be eventful. We are not just talking about a tightly-packed itinerary. I have never tried missing my flight and bus all in the same trip. From the day we touched down till the night of our departure, we have had so many encounters to share. Somehow, I feel the transport system in Korea seems to be very much against us three… We were sold the wrong bus tickets to Lotte Hotel World, we missed our original flight to Jeju and then we also missed the airport transfer on our night of departure. From day one to day eight, it’s nothing short of shocks and surprises for us.

But if you throw all these aside, this summer trip was still pretty amazing. I broke my personal kimchi-eating record by eating kimchi on a daily basis, I burnt a hole in my own pocket with my spending, I fell in love with Jeju in the embrace of nature and in the company of our friendly tour guide, and most importantly, I fulfilled a 2013 wish to lend my support to the comfort women personally at their weekly Wednesday protest. To be physically in Korea, to have seen what I saw, to have done what I did, to have met awesome people, I am blessed to have the encounters that I have had in this country, both sweet and the not-so-sweet…

As I scroll through the photos, a wave of thoughts and emotions just came back to me naturally, like what happened at the particular moment at that particular shot, like how did I even end up in that particular pose in that particular spot. That’s the beauty of photography I believe, to tell the story behind each frame.

My victorious moment after retrieving the hat!

With that, I will use these photos to revisit those memories, to re-live in those moments, to re-feel those emotions, and most importantly, to be thankful that I have had the chance to step foot in Korea in 2014 with my 2 sisters.

Wedding Bells: Part 2 – Why I chose Yvonne Creative

I’m not a very rational person to start with. For any decision I make, I won’t be able to tell you the x number of reasons why I chose a particular thing. More often than not, I will reply you with “I feel…” Yes, I’m very emotional and a lot of my decisions is based on my feelings and my intuition (like what food to order, which dress to buy etc).

Therefore similarly, it was my intuition that led me to sign my bridal package with Yvonne Creative. The last Saturday (26 July 2014) before the 7th lunar month starts, we were shopping for a bridal package along the stretch of Tanjong Pagar shophouses. I didn’t have any bridal studio in mind, because I really didn’t do any homework prior to that. Neither have I attended any bridal fair before. I flipped through the bridal magazines gifted by Angelia, but all the bridal gowns look equally stunning to me such that none of it stood out in particular. Hence, I decided to let my intuition do the work again.

We headed to Tanjong Pagar after lunch and the walk from the MRT to the row of shophouses was enough to make me perspire alot. We decided to start from the far end (meaning the furthest away from Maxwell) so we could have a general feel of all the bridal studios on our way to the starting point.

Z Wedding was the first bridal studio we entered. The lady who attended to me, Grace, was really nice and friendly in the beginning. She showed us some photo albums and asked us some questions like when is our wedding date, are we doing lunch or dinner etc so she could check on the availability of the make up artist and photographer. She was the first person to tell us that our wedding date is a hot date, but I didn’t pay much attention to it as I was thinking it was probably their marketing strategy to create a sense of urgency in me. Thereafter, she started asking me if there is any style of wedding gown that I am looking at, or any gowns that I am interested in after flipping through the 2-3 photo albums she showed me. Being the typical me, I didn’t have a very strong opinion on the type of gown that I should be wearing. My bottomline is: so long as I look pretty. I tried a toga wedding gown which the lady recommended. The same toga wedding gown was featured in the bridal magazine. I looked okay in it, but not particularly stunning.

The toga gown which I tried

The toga gown which I tried (Credits to Z Wedding’s official website)

After trying one gown, she began to hard-sell us the bridal package. She became very aggressive at one point which I personally felt was quite uncalled for. Her hard selling was primarily directed at me, because in the choice of bridal package, I guess it’s usually the bride-to-be who has more say. Mister felt abit offended at her hard-selling tactics, hence we decided to give it a miss. Afterall, their pricing was on the high side, as they have a collaboration with Chris Ling for the photography which was one of their main selling point too. Thereafter, Mister alerted me to one of our close friends’ review on Z Wedding and we are glad I wasn’t swayed in the shop.

We walked a bit more and passed by a few bridal studios that didn’t quite catch our fancy. Thereafter, we saw someone outside Yvonne Creative that said they are having some promotion lols. So I said, ok let’s check it out! I went inside and I was attended to by Tiffany, the marketing manager of Yvonne Creative. Similar to Z Wedding, they asked the same questions: wedding date, style of wedding gown etc. After the 2nd bridal studio, I concluded that my wedding date is indeed a very hot date. She even showed me her booking schedules for my date as well as other dates so that I could make a fair comparision on the number of bookings for the day. One thing that Yvonne Creative did differently was that they didn’t show me any photo albums and we went straight to trying on gowns. I immediately told her to recommend me a gown which she felt will look good on me. She recommended a tube A-line gown which does look really good on me, which eventually became my chosen gown (a big big secret for now). Thereafter, she even let me try on a different style of gown to illustrate the fact that a tube gown will look better on me, which is true indeed. We were chatting in the fitting room and that’s when I felt that Tiffany is a really nice and warm lady. She showed us the bridal packages that her studio could offer and she assured us that everything can be negotiated as her mother is Yvonne, the designer of the gowns. On the day i signed the package, I saw Yvonne was attending to another bride-to-be with her gown fitting.

We negotiated on the bridal package, like cancelling the evening gown and kua/tea dress as at that point in time, we are not having any dinner banquet and I did not plan to change to another outfit for the tea ceremony. More importantly, Yvonne Creative does not have different categories of gowns that required additional top-up nor charge any additional fees for alteration of the gown (changing of belt/adding of details etc). Feeling assured that there is a gown to my liking and being offered a bridal package of a reasonable pricing, we decided to sign up with them and paid a 50% deposit upfront! That’s when I officially became a Yvonne Creative bride! We fixed the date for gown fitting on 30 August 2014 and our pre-wedding shoot on 14 September 2014 (which is happening this Sunday) before we welcome the travelling month of August 2014 to Korea and Bali.

A week later, I went back to Yvonne Creative and Tiffany to tell them that I require a tea dress for my lunch reception, as I wanted mini fashion show for myself. To my surprise, they actually added a tea dress to my bridal package at no extra charge. I also negotiated for our pre-wedding videographers (Angelia & Huiping) to follow us around on our pre-wedding shoot day so they are able to capture moments of our wedding preparations. I feel this was a huge concession on their part which I am really grateful for, especially when the videographers are not from their studio. In this aspect, I feel their after-sales service is still as warm and friendly as the package sign-up day and they really lived up to their words that everything can be negotiated. For that, thumbs up for them!

With gown-fitting and trial make-up done, so far so good with Yvonne Creative! Points of improvement definitely (like showing me the gowns that were already booked on my actual wedding day), but I’m still enjoying my time being a momentary princess everytime I am in the bridal studio. I will blog more about my gown-fitting and trial make-up journey soon! Fingers crossed that Yvonne Creative continues to deliver their promised quality of service right up to our actual day. I will keep all of you updated 🙂
